How do I use my Every Day Carry Wood-Henge Creation?
My design for Wood-Henges was meant to serve two purposes. First the width of the piece is about the size of a human thumb. The indent in the wood on both sides perfectly fits your thumb on one side and the crook of you index and middle fingers combined on the other side. The perfect curve for rubbing the Wood-Henge piece for stress reduction, relaxation and a fidget tool. The second use is for becoming more agile with your fingers by twirling the piece through them continuously. As a guitarist, I do find this helpful in stretching the fingers, when I have been playing too much in a day and in increasing their agility and flexibility.Watch this video to see how it is done.
How do I care for my Wood-Henge piece?
Wood-Henge pieces are made of hardwoods varying from medium to very hard. They are difficult to dent, but will scratch if rubbed against something sharp. I do carry one with me most of the time, but place it in my pocket that does not carry coins, pocket knives etc.. The oils from your own hands imparted from rubbing or twirling the piece will overtime make the piece look "richer" and help preserve it. Do not leave it exposed to bright sun on a regular basis. Doing this will cause the piece to dry out and may, in some pieces, change its color. Your Wood-Henge pieces are designed to be carried and used. If you do get marks on it and they bother you, then you will have to obtain micro-mesh pads and touch it up. Do not use regular sandpaper, not even even 2500 grit sandpaper as it is not nearly fine enough to achieve the polishing effect I have created with these pieces. Also, do not use any cleaners on your Wood-Henge. You can wipe it with a damp cloth, but be sure to dry it off immediately.
Can I request a specific wood?
You can, and if the wood, wood/hybrid is available, I will make you a piece. There is a slight extra charge for custom orders. Each piece of wood is unique, no two pieces are the same. Even if you like one I created previously, the new creation will not look just like it. Send me an email or via ETSY to custom order a piece.
Are Wood-Henge pieces all the same size?
Generally speaking they are fairly consistent in size and look. These pieces are all hand made so size and the curves will vary + or - about 10%. This adds to the uniqueness of each piece as no two pieces will resemble each other even if they are made from the same hardwood stock. Generally, pieces are 1 and 7/8" long and ¾" wide. There are some smaller pieces and some wider pieces. If a Wood-Henge size is beyond the normal specifications, they will be labelled as such on the Etsy write-up. Wood-Henges come in different styles, but all the styles are about the same length.
How can you get the wood to shine like that without using a coating like a high gloss varathane
I admit I am always surprised at what starts happening to the piece when I get two thirds through the sanding process, which is at about the 6,000 grit sanding stage. The grain, the colors and the natural shine come out. Actually, once you hit this level, you are not really sanding but rather, you are polishing the resin in the wood (hardened sap) to a glossy luster. When you are finished polishing with the 12,000 grit pad, the wood literally seems to come alive. Many of the pieces get a luminous look to them similar to an opal or a tiger eye stone called chatoyancy. Unfortunately, the camera does not really pick that up, but movies do.
My Wood-Henge has gotten darker (or lighter) since I received it. Is this normal?
This is totally normal. The wood is adjusting to your environment and to your oils. Some woods never change, but I have a number of 100% wood pieces that have changed to a darker, richer looking colour. Amboyna Burls often get darker and "richer" looking as time goes on. Some wood, for example purpleheart, when exposed to bright sunlight will change color. Woods that are not stabilized will change a lot more than stabilized woods.
I really like those foam stands you have in your photographs. Can I buy those from you?
I hope to be able to offer stands in the future. In the meantime, I have created a tutorial on how to create them. Go here to view view the tutorial. |
